Catherine Ford was born in Bloomsbury, London; her father was absent from the family, and so she was raised by her mother, grandma and godparents. In her early years Ford was diagnosed with an obsessive-compulsive disorder and suffered anxiety linked to the word association. Ford became interested in the acting profession during her teens and became a member of the National Youth Theatre. She was admitted to Sylvia Young Theatre School but after a week, she decided that she didn't fit in. Ford rather than applying to Central School of Speech and Drama and securing a place on her third attempt, applied and won an admission to the Central School of Speech and Drama. Shaun Dingwall played Pete Tyler in Doctor Who. Ford's first appearance on television was an episode in 1991 called Surgical Spirit. By the time she graduated, Ford already went by "Catherine Tate". During the Nineties, Tate could be seen on television in programmes including The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London's Burning. Tate would also frequently work as a theatre actor and was eventually a part of in the Royal Shakespeare Company during its season of 2000-2001. Tate's stand-up comedy and humour, which she added to her repertoire in 1996, quickly gained her attention.
